Het laatste wat wij bij mijn weten op alle tv-kanalen en in alle kranten over Australië hoorden, was het blijde nieuws dat daar de gloeilamp in de ban wordt gedaan. Binnen nu en drie jaar moet iedereen er aan de spaarlamp.
Handige zet, nu er later dit jaar verkiezingen zijn. Milieu scoort altijd goed. Het zou nog meer schelen als Australië ook het verdrag van Kyoto ondertekende.

Maar donderdag kwam Dick Cheney op bezoek in Sydney en dat was aanleiding voor Stop the War Coalition de mensen op te roepen tot een grote protestdemonstratie. En die kwam er.


Het is er zo te zien hard aan toe gegaan. Mijn vriendin zat er middenin.

Wat haar enorm boos heeft gemaakt is het feit dat oppositieleider en presidentskandidaat Kevin Rudd, van wie je anders mocht verwachten, het nodig vond te zeggen dat onder de demonstranten mensen zich gedragen hadden als wilde beesten.

Among these protestors we see a bunch of violent ferals and they should expect absolutely no sympathy from the police. You see, in Australia we do things peacefully. If we've got different points of view we should be putting those points of view peacefully and in the normal fashion, peaceful forms of expression of different views. There's no place for violence in this country, and what I've seen is a lot of violence and it's unacceptable.

What a disappointment: first you call peaceful protesters 'violent ferals', then you support the proposition that the recent batch of asylum seekers go to Christmas Island. You sound like Mr Howard, Mr Rudd, and I fear you will not only sound like him, but also follow the same base trend in your policies as well: Kowtowing to the the dictators of this world - ie big business, and USA state terror.

I was at the Thursday demonstration in Sydney, and witnessed the unprovoked violence executed by the police. I was shocked to experience the withdrawal of a fundamental democratic right, namely the right to peacefully protest and demonstrate. I was disgusted to see how the police picked off people, manhandled them, and shoved us around, treating us with disrespect. On whose orders? Your party colleague Morris Iemma's. And then to hear you perpetuate the myth that we, the people, are ferals and a mob. Shame on you, Mr Rudd.

And that Australia, as a signaturee of the UN Refugee Conventions, under your leadership will also trample on the rights of refugees is yet another proof of my point: you are just as untrustworthy and unrepresentative of the people as the current leadership, both here and in the USA.

Zo is dat. Ik vind het belangrijk dit door te geven. Haar woorden hier even te laten horen. De thema's zijn immers global. Waar zij in Sydney de straat voor opgaat is hetzelfde als waar ik in Amsterdam de straat voor opga.




Wat betreft die gloeilampen nog even: wij hebben in ons hele huis spaarlampen met sensor. Heerlijk. Ze beslissen geheel zelfstandig wanneer ze aan moeten en weer uit. Ze geven mooi licht. Je haalt ze bij de Kwantum, de Gamma of gewoon op internet en ik wil nooit anders meer.
